Determination of Cl, Br and I in soils by ICP-MS: microwave-assisted wet partial digestion using H2O2in an ultra-high pressure system

Abstract: In this study, we proposed a method for halogen determination using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after partial digestion of soils basically using H2O2 as a reagent for organic matrix composition.

“…Only the last one provided a quantitative recovery for all the elements analysed; in particular three different mass fractions were obtained for Sr depending on the digestion method used. The determination of Cl by ED-XRF is straightforward while a careful optimisation of the digestion is needed when ICP-based techniques are to be used ( Pereira, Enders, Mello & Flores, 2018 ); on the contrary as described above some very light elements such as Na and B cannot be analysed with the instrument used in this work.…”

“…In brief, both wet digestion sample treatment protocols, for example, using microwave‐assisted systems (Barbosa et al, 2013; Pereira et al, 2018), pyrohydrolysis (Pereira et al, 2018), and LA‐ICP‐MS approaches (Seo et al, 2011; Hammerli et al, 2013; Rottier & Audétat, 2019) are implicated for chlorine, bromine, and iodine quantification in different matrices. Boulyga & Heumann described the isotope dilution LA‐ICP‐MS method for direct determination of chlorine, bromine, and iodine ( 37 Cl, 79 Br, and 129 I enriched spikes, respectively) in rock and sediment samples.…”

“…Determination of halogens such as Cl and Br by ED-XRF is straightforward while careful optimisation of the digestion procedure is fundamental when ICP-based methods are used [17]. For all the BV-C populations, Cl contributed strongly to the definition of the model.…”
