The surging growth of clinical and pharmaceutical medication as a consequence of population growth has become a threat to the environment. The inherent antagonistic effects of medications and their metabolized side products on a healthy society is an essential concern requiring immediate monitoring. To speculate on these environmental pollutants, a huge number of selective, sensitive, costeffective, and user-compatible metal−organic framework (MOF)-based fluorescent sensors have been reported by many prominent research groups. Many recent review articles cover the details of MOF-based florescence sensing of antibiotics, but an accumulation of MOF-based fluorometric detection of other pharmaceutical drugs is still not reported. Realizing this research gap, we have discussed most of the reported MOF sensors for various pharmaceutical drugs in this Review. The details of selectivity, sensitivity (limit of detection (LOD) and Stern−Volmer constant (K sv )), response time, and proposed mechanisms of drug sensing have been thoroughly discussed. Moreover, this article also covers the details of a few MOF-based antibiotic sensors, which have not been covered by any previous report. Therefore, this Review will provide valuable information and guidance to researchers to develop targeted fluorescent sensors for hazardous pharmaceutical drugs. Additionally, environmental science researchers can leverage this information to enhance their efforts to monitor and control environmental pollution.

Highly-Selective Analytical Strategy for 90 Pesticides and Metabolites Residues in Fish and Shrimp Samples

The analysis of pesticide residues in aquatic products is challenging due to low residue levels and the complex matrix interference. In this study, we developed a simple, fast method for the trace analysis of 90 pesticides and metabolites in aquatic products. The analytes covered a wide polarity range with log Kow (log octanol-water partition coefficient) ranging from −1.2 to 6.37. Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) and prawn (Penaeus chinensis) samples were chosen to validate the quantification method. The samples were extracted by 0.2% formic-acetonitrile, cleaned by solid-phase extraction (PRiME HLB), and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography−tandem mass spectrometry. The results showed good linearities for the analytes and were observed in the range of 0.05–50 μg/L. The recoveries of the method were within 50.4–118.6%, with the relative standard deviations being lower than 20%. The limits of quantifications (LOQs) of the method were in the range of 0.05–5.0 μg/kg, which were superior to values compared with other research. The developed method was applied to detect pesticide residues in prawn samples from eastern coastal areas of China. Three herbicide residues of diuron, prometryn, and atrazine were detected in prawn samples. The method was sensitive and efficient, which is of significance in expanding the screening scope and improving the quantitative analysis efficiency in aquatic products.

The progression of drugs into clinical phases requires proper toxicity assessment in animals and the correct identification of possible metabolites. Accordingly, different animal models are used to preliminarily evaluate toxicity and biotransformations. Rodents are the most common models used to preliminarily evaluate the safety of drugs; however, their use is subject to ethical consideration and elevated costs, and strictly regulated by national legislations. Herein, we developed a novel, cheap and convenient toxicity model using Tenebrio molitor coleoptera (TMC). A panel of 15 drugs—including antivirals and antibacterials—with different therapeutic applications was administered to TMC and the LD50 was determined. The values are comparable with those already determined in mice and rats. In addition, a TMC model was used to determine the presence of the main metabolites and in vivo pharmacokinetics (PK), and results were compared with those available from in vitro assays and the literature. Taken together, our results demonstrate that TMC can be used as a novel and convenient preliminary toxicity model to preliminarily evaluate the safety of experimental compounds and the formation of main metabolites, and to reduce the costs and number of rodents, according to 3R principles.
