Determination of Chlorophyll and Carotenoids Present in the Seeds of the Plant Family Apiaceae and the Impact on Seed Quality

Abstract: In this study, we assessed the content of chlorophyllaandb, β-carotene and lutein in seeds of carrot, celery, dill, parsley and parsnip commercial varieties by spectrophotometric method. It was determined that the content of chlorophyllawas higher than chlorophyllband both differed significantly between plant species and varieties. The highest amounts of chlorophylla, chlorophyllb, β-carotene and lutein were detected in parsley “Olomoucka dlouha”. The lowest amounts of chlorophylla, chlorophyllb, β-carotene an… Show more

“…Such mechanism may be related to an increase in chlorophyll a and b in aged seeds and higher amount of chlorophyll a in the resulting seedlings to improve the conversion of light to chemical energy—although this was not sufficient to improve the photochemical activity of the photosystem II as revealed by F V /F M values. In fact, chlorophyll plays an essential role in the physiological performance of mature seeds 36 , 37 , and plant responses to abiotic stress conditions 38 .…”

“…This result validates the findings of Jalink et al ( 1998 ) who showed that the magnitude of chlorophyll fluorescence in seeds was inversely related to the germination performance and/or to the capacity for generation of normal seedlings in cabbage ( Brassica oleracea ). Seeds with non-degraded chlorophyll are more susceptible to deterioration due to the production of harmful compounds derived from chlorophyll oxidation, such as singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) (Grulichova et al, 2018 ), which is toxic to cells and involved in the programmed cell death (Triantaphylidès and Havaux, 2009 ).…”

“…The spectrophotometric measurement of chlorophylls and carotenoids in mature seeds has been successfully used in other studies, that was performed with various solvents such as acetone (Allorent et al, 2015), dimethylformamide (Zinsmeister et al, 2016), methanol (Smolikova et. al., 2018), or petroleum ether and tetrahydrofuran (Bulda et al, 2008;Smolikova et al, 2011;Grulichova et al, 2018).…”
