Determination of chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins in purified pentachlorophenol by liquid chromatography

Abstract: A rapid liquid chromatographic method for the determination of hexa-, hepta-, and octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins in pentachlorophenol is described. The nonphenolic impurities are quantitatively isolated from the sample matrix by an extraction-column chromatography procedure that permits the chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins to be determined by reversephase partition liquid chromatography. Sample concentrates are analyzed in a 12-min separation with detection limits of 100 parts per billion. The entire analysis may be… Show more

“…The PCDD/F are subsequently distributed to the environment with the product or its waste stream. Examples of this class include PCDD/F contamination associated with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) production (10,11), paper pulp bleaching (12), or pentachlorophenol production (13). These sources will often produce a specific mix of congeners rather than the wide variety of congeners produced during combustion.…”

“…Data on the distribution of CDDs as a function of depth are also presented. Pentachlorophenol (PCP), which is commonly used as a wood preservative, can contain chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (CDDs) as impurities (1). Technical PCP has been reported to contain chlorodiphenyl ethers, chlorodibenzo-p-dioxins, chlorodibenzofurans, and hydroxychlorodiphenyl ethers; the octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) content of technical PCP is typically 500-1500 ppm (2).…”

“…Sample photoelectrocatalized for 40 min was chosen representative of samples with high potential risk as detected by bioassay. The starting PCP solution was analyzed because PCP can contain PCDD/Fs impurities (Pfeiffer et al, 1978). Sample photoelectrocatalized for 120 min was analyzed to ensure the removal of the PCDD/Fs.…”
