single-time assays of trihalomethanes in drinking water. Furthermore, there is sufficient variation in even a large system so that a simple harmonic model cannot allow prediction of trihalomethane concentrations from one day to the next. If a maximum contaminant level for these compounds in drinking water is to be monitored, recognition of the 24-h variation is essential, but in addition the larger contribution of as yet undefined sources of day-to-day variability must be taken into account. The observed day-to-day variability may be of a systematic nature, i.e., possibly reflecting certain weekly cycles in water usage or in operations of the water treatment plant. Or, it may be simply a part of the broad scale irregular fluctuations known to be typical for the day-to-day behavior of river flow, ambient air and water temperatures, influencing the amount of humic material available for reaction with chlorine and the rate of trihalomethane formation. This question, although it cannot be answered with certainty given the available data, is, however, important, since it has a bearing on the potential predictability of trihalomethane concentrations in drinking water. Luminescence bioassay using Vibrio fischeri and in vitro ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) induction bioassay using H4-IIE rat hepatoma cell were employed to test toxicity changes during the photoelectrocatalysis process for the degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) on TiO 2 nanotubes electrode. Acute toxicity of the reaction solution reduced by 83% after 120 min of irradiation. Bioassayderived 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents (TEQ bio ) increased from 0.72 to 6.72 ng l À1 during the former reaction stage, decreasing rapidly to 1.25 ng l À1 during the latter reaction stage. HRGC/HRMS analysis detected polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/ Fs) congeners in the reaction mixtures. TEQ bio and chemical-derived 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents (TEQ cal ) were about of the same order of magnitude. Both results illustrated the formation of dioxins and their removal by photoelectrocatalysis. Moreover, photoelectrocatalysis showed a significant priority over direct photolysis and photocatalysis depending on the reaction conditions, not only for PCP removal but also for reduction in toxicity. r
