Determination of cadmium in alcohol fuel using Moringa oleifera seeds as a biosorbent in an on-line system coupled to FAAS

Abstract: In this study a new method for determination of cadmium in alcohol fuel using Moringa oleifera seeds as a biosorbent in an on-line preconcentration system coupled to flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was developed. Flow and chemical variables of the proposed system were optimized through multivariate designs. The limit of detection for cadmium was 5.50microg L(-1) and the precision was below 2.3% (35.0microg L(-1), n=9). The analytical curve was linear from 5 to 150microg L(-1), with a correlation co… Show more

“…Flame absortion atomic spectroscopy (FAAS) in turn has been widely employed for this purpose [4,22,23,24,25,26]. However, a preconcentration step is necessary due to the high limits of detection provided by this technique [24,25,26].…”

“…Three sets of experiments were carried out simultaneously; one set involved metal ions in water without biomass, another with biomass alone in water and the other had metal ions in water with biomass. The study of the effect of different experimental parameters such as pH (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8), biosorbent dose (0.4 and 0.6 g), biosorbent size (0.75 mm and 0.250 mm) and contact time (0-70 minutes).…”

“…The PZC of the Moringa oleifera seeds has been found to be between 6.0 and 7.0 (Alves et al, 2010) indicating that the surface of the biosorbent presents acid characteristics. The surface charge of the seeds is positive at pH < PZC, is neutral at pH = PZC and is negative at pH > PZC (Cleide et al, 2013).…”

“…The studies explored analyte retention in biosorbents such as Moringa oleifera 171 or vermicompost used as garden fertilizer. 172 Cadmium and Pb were also determined in ethanol fuel by GFAAS, exploiting a filter furnace to avoid using chemical modifiers, stabilize the volatile analytes and to short the pyrolysis step. 173 Detection limits were 0.1 mg L -1 Cd and 0.3 mg L -1 Pb, with recoveries in the 90 to 120% range.…”
