Determination of CaCO3 and SiO2 content in the binders of historic lime mortars

Abstract: The binders of historic mortars composed of small grain sized silica (SiO 2 ) and carbonated lime (CaCO 3 ) are considered as the main part that give hydraulic character and high strength to the mortar. In this study, FTIR, SEM-EDS, LIBS and XRD spectroscopy were used to find out the weight ratios of CaCO 3 to SiO 2 in the binders of historic lime mortars. For this purpose, a series of pure calcium carbonate and silica mixture were prepared in ten combinations in varying ratios from 0.5 to 5. Calibration curve… Show more

“…About 15 to 30% of the waste is generated from the bricks and tile industry. Sağın, Böke, Aras, & Yalçın (2012) state that ceramic materials like crushed tiles are artificial pozzolans. The specific gravity of ceramic wastes has been reported in the range of 2.27 to 2.82 by various investigators (Kamala & Rao, 2012;Sabat, 2012;Sekar, Ganesan, & Nampoothiri, 2011;Tavakoli et al, 2013;Veera Reddy, 2010).…”

“…The rock materials exhibited peaks typical of carbonate materials containing some quartz or silica impurities. The band at around 1200-900 cm -1 , ascribable to Si-O and Si-O-Si vibrations (Madejová 2003, Sağın et al 2012, Sdiri et al 2010, evidences the presence of quartz/silica. Several researchers have studied and employed FTIR analysis as a rapid technique for identifying dolomite (Boggs Jr and Boggs 2009, Jovanovski et al 2002, Stanienda-Pilecki 2019.…”

“…A possible solution for these challenges may be found in the use of historical building materials, which tended to be more environmentally friendly, durable, and sustainable. Historically, lime-based mortar was widely used in ancient Greece [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ], and pozzolan-based hydraulic materials [ 3 , 6 ] were extensively used in Europe and Western Asia until the invention of modern Portland cement in the 19th century in the UK. In ancient China, lime was also produced for construction as a building material about 5000 years ago [ 6 , 7 ].…”
