Determination of benzene and alkylbenzenes in milk by purge and trap gas chromatography

Abstract: Milk samples were analyzed for benzene and alkylbenzenes by a purge and trap gas Chromatographic method. Average concentration (n = 26) of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene and o-xylene in human milk was 0.7, 12.8, 1.3, 4.7 and 1.4 ppb, respectively. These concentrations were found to be from six to more than sixty times higher than results reported by other studies. These concentrations were also comparable to those found in cow's milk (n = 9).
