Determination of average molecular weight of commercial surfactants: Alkylpolyglucosides and fatty alcohol ethoxylates

Abstract: A quick and simple method, based on elemental and moisture analyses, is proposed for estimating the mean molecular weight of alkylpolyglucosides and fatty alcohol ethoxylates, which are nonionic surfactants that are attracting growing interest for their ease of biodegradation. Analyses for the water content and the elemental composition were carried out for three alkylpolyglucosides (Henkel-Cognis): Glucopon 215, Glucopon 600, and Glucopon 650, as well as for five fattyalcohol ethoxylates (Kao Corporation): FI… Show more

“…S4) spectra as reported in Appendix S1. The LC–MS chromatogram displaying a resolution of three main components corresponding to the C8, C10, and C12 alkyl chain lengths is in good agreement with that reported by Rodriguez et al (). Both the FT‐IR and 1 H NMR spectra display the expected structural features of the hydroxyl, methylene‐methyl, and CO bonding effects.…”
