Determination of aluminum ions by indirect potentiometry in a flow system

Abstract: A potentiometric system is described for the indirect flow determination of A3+ with an aluminum wire as indicator electrode. The method is based on the reaction between aluminum and fluoride ions at pH 5.0 in acetate buffer. The reduction in activity of fluoride ions is detected by the aluminum electrode. The response was optimized for the flow rate of solution, length of reaction tubing, concentration of fluoride reagent, and pH of the buffer. The response was linear with concentration of aluminum in the ran… Show more

“…The detection sensitivity and selectivity for metal ions tested depend on the ligands and their concentration, and the carrier pH. Metallic wire electrode sensors have some advantages over conventional ISEs for a number of reasons, including simpler miniaturization, lower cost and easier incorporation into flow cell design [20]. This novel detection device coupled with IC for detection of metal ions is being investigated in our laboratories, and these results will be published in a future article.…”

“…In a recent article [4] we reported the development of flow potentiometry with an aluminum wire sensor for A13+ based on an indirect method of determination. Aluminum has been shown to respond to fluoride [5] and other ions [6,71 and shows many useful characteristics, stability, cheapness and the ability to be worked into small electrodes.…”
