Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) have been found in surface waters worldwide. They are known for exerting adverse effects on animals of many species, including humans. EDCs comprise compounds of anthropogenic origin. They can enter waterways via either discharges from wastewater treatment plant (WWTPs), combined sewer overflows (CSO) or atmospheric deposition. In this work, the fate and removal of four phthalates and two alkylphenols: Diethyl phthalate (DEP), Di-n-Butyl phthalate (DnBP), Butyl Benzyl phthalate (BBP), Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), nonylphenol (NP) and octylphenol (OP) were investigated within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) using lamellar clarification and biofiltration. This plant receives about 240,000 m 3 d −1 of wastewater. The whole treatment process comprises: screening, grit removal, primary sedimentation using coagulant and flocculant, followed by biofiltration units. Phthalates and alkylphenols were monitored at three locations, including raw sewage, before primary treatment, decanted effluents, before biological treatment, and final effluents, just before discharge to receiving waters. Nine campaigns were performed in 2011 during different seasons.In 2.95 µg.l -1 ), followed by DEHP (0.95 to 6.43, median 2.30 µg.l -1 ) and NP (0.31 to 1.36, median 0.63 µg.l -1 ). Contaminant removal depends on the physicochemical characteristics of the compounds. For example, for lamellar clarification, removal efficiency was found to be strongly dependent to log Kow and, hence, to be highly correlated with their sorption coefficient (Kd). As a consequence, compounds with high log Kow (>3) were removed to a significant extent. DEHP was highly removed by lamellar clarification (68.8%), followed by BBP (61.5%) and NP (51.0%). Besides, DEP (log Kow < 3) was slightly removed (13.8%). During biofiltration, both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds were equally eliminated. Therefore, DEP (87.3%), OP (88.0%) and DEHP (81.9%) were mostly removed during biological treatment.

a b s t r a c tPhotonic-magnetic responsive molecularly imprinted microspheres (PM-MIMs) were prepared by seed polymerization, through suitable functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles for further coating with photoresponsive functional monomer and imprinted layers, and then were successfully applied to the fast and selective extraction of 17␤-estradiol (17␤-E 2 ) from real samples. The PM-MIMs possessed a sandwich micro-spherical structure containing Fe 3 O 4 core, SiO 2 middle layer, and MIPs shell with thickness of 25 nm. The PM-MIMs displayed excellent photoresponsive properties and could be rapidly separated from solutions under an external magnet. The PM-MIMs had specific affinity towards 17␤-E 2 with high adsorption capacity (Q max = 0.84 mg g −1 ) and fast binding kinetics (K d = 26.08 mg L −1 ). The PM-MIMs proved to be an ideal photoswitch with the ability of reversible uptake and release of 17␤-E 2 upon alternate 365 and 440 nm irradiation: 45.0% of 17␤-E 2 released from the PM-MIMs upon 365 nm irradiation, and 94.0% of the released 17␤-E 2 was rebound to the PM-MIMs at 440 nm. Accordingly, the PM-MIMs were applied for fast separation and extraction of 17␤-E 2 followed by HPLC-UV determination, presenting the low limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) and quantification (LOQ, S/N = 10) of 0.18 and 0.62 mol L −1 , respectively. The high recoveries for spiked milk powder and drinking water samples were in the range of 97.5-113.0% with relative standard deviations less than 4.4%. This study reasonably combined photonic response, magnetic separation and surface imprinting, which endowed the PM-MIMs with significant advantages of high adsorption capacity and fast binding kinetics, convenient separation and recycled use, and simple rapid eco-benign adsorption/elution processes for template molecules. Thus, the PM-MIMs based method may be a simple, rapid, convenient, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way for simultaneous separation, enrichment and detection of trace 17␤-E 2 in complicated matrices.

A laboratory-scale, intermittently fed, organicbased vertical flow filter was tested as a pre-treatment of high-strength urban wastewater to reduce the risk of clogging in treatment wetlands. At an average hydraulic loading rate of 815 L/m 2 day and average surface loading rates of biological oxygen demand of 458 g/m 2 day, chemical oxygen demand of 594 g/m 2 day and suspended solids of 310 g/m 2 day, the organic-based vertical flow filter achieved removal efficiencies of 48 % of biological oxygen demand, 45 % of chemical oxygen demand, 69 % of suspended solids and 51 % of turbidity. For this unit, removals were significantly correlated with organic surface loading rates but not with hydraulic loading rate. Additionally, the organic-based vertical flow filter removed almost completely the hormone residues studied: estrone, 17b-estradiol, 17b-ethynyl estradiol, diethylstilbestrol, estriol, norethisterone and testosterone, most probably by the combination of adsorption onto the organic substrate and biodegradation. The efficiency of the combined system was remarkable for biological oxygen demand (97 %), chemical oxygen demand (89 %), suspended solids and turbidity (99 %), fecal coliforms and E. coli (99.9 %) and fecal enterococci (99 %).
