Age assessment in children and young adults is a relevant forensic issue. It is requested not only in evaluating criminal responsibility in youths without proper identification documents, often in relation to age thresholds, but also for release of a residency permit, and asylum seekers of minors. The analysis of the Risser sign and the iliac crest ossification process has been proposed as a useful tool for forensic age estimation. We evaluated the applicability of three different age estimation methods on a sample of 497 pelvic radiographs of Italian individuals between 10 and 25 years of age. Each method showed high reliability for both reproducibility and repeatability. The staging technique inspired by Kreitner and Kellinghaus methods (KK-MS) is easier than the Risser method in applicability, as it is not affected by the variations of ossification. We observed that all subjects who attained stage 3c of KK-MS and 5 of Risser Fr were >14 years, suggesting the benefits of these methods for that age threshold. The applicability of the area measurement method, inspired by Cameriere's approach, ranged between 12 and 20 years, but the statistical analysis showed only a moderate correlation with age. In order to evaluate the possible use of this approach it is therefore necessary to clarify and exclude external factors influencing the parameter. In conclusion, the iliac crest ossification is of interest in age estimation for forensic purposes. The evaluation of the pelvis X-ray, in addition to the other common dental and skeletal methods, could become a useful supplementary tool in age estimation for the 14 year threshold in order to fulfill forensic-level requirements.

The present study was carried out to examine if Mckern and Stewart method (1957) could be used to assess the age from pubic symphysis of male individuals of the Dakshina Kannada District. Samples of pubic bones were collected from 50 deceased males of known age who were brought for autopsy to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at a Tertiary care centre after obtaining a written informed consent from the relatives of the deceased. The analysis showed that the component based method of McKern and Stewart cannot be applied in its original form to the Indian population. The study established that the changes aiding in age analysis were more defined in the younger age groups and were obscured as the age advanced. It is also observed that the changes categorizing the bone in a particular age group commence at a later stage in the present study when compared to the reference studyThe likelihood of changes in each component of analysis being more pronounced in early stages are high compared to the older age groupThough analysis of pubic symphysis is useful in age estimation a study in bigger sample size will further prove the above hypothesis.

Introduction: Age estimation of dead persons of unknown age and identity from skeletal remains has an important role in legal and forensic investigations. Due to their relatively better ability to withstand the impact of physical forces and agents, the skeletal remains of human mortals provide us with wealth of information in the form of preserved morphological patterns or markings on bones. Out of all bones, morphological features on pubic bones are by far the best indicators. A large-scale study on pubic bones was conducted by a famous anatomist, Todd, in 1920, and since then his method is being followed for the assessment of age. Materials and methods: Cadaveric pubic bones of 204 Northwest Indian adult males aged 18 to 61 years were taken for the study from the archive collection in museum of anatomy. Sixteen morphological features on the symphyseal surface of pubic bones were noted and arranged in 10 phases according to Todd's (1920) method. Frequency of these features present in each phase was calculated. Linear regression analysis was applied to obtain an equation for estimation of age from a pubic bone of an unknown deceased individual. Results: It was seen that frequency of most morphological features of the pubic bones in the present study age groups (phases) was 100%, i.e., similar to those in Todd's study. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.9, p < 0.001) between the actual age of the pubic bone and age estimated by linear regression equation. Conclusion: Despite numerous improved methods, Todd's method remains the most useful method for determination of age. Appearance of morphological features on the symphyseal surface of pubic bones in the present study were similar to most phases of Todd's study. Thus, Todd's method can be successfully applied for the estimation of age in Northwest Indian adult male population.
