Determination of 2,4,6-triiodophenol and its metabolites in human urine by anion-exchange chromatography with ICP-MS detection

Abstract: An analytical method using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed for the separation and determination of iodophenol compounds in human urine samples. The advantages of using highly-sensitive 127 I detection provided by ICP-MS for the speciation of 2,4,6-triiodophenol, 4-iodophenol and 2-iodophenol are shown in this work. 2,4,6-triiodophenol is also referred to as Bobel-24, an anti-inflammatory. Chromatographic conditions wer… Show more

“…The LOD obtained in this work are comparable to previous results with CE separation [7,[23][24][25][26]. Compared to conventional LC-ICP-MS detection limit for bromine and iodine speciation analysis [6,10,11,14], these CE-ICP-MS values are poorer, mainly because of the smaller sample size (8 nL) and/or dilution by the make-up solution. However, CE separation offers better resolution with less reagent and sample volume.…”

“…It is important to have a highly sensitive analytical method available for their determination after separation. Several methods of ion chromatography (IC), LC, size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), and CE coupled with different detection methods for iodine and bromine speciation analysis have appeared, including UV detection [2,7,8], inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) [9,10], and ICP-MS [2,[10][11][12][13][14][15]. The utility of CE for speciation analysis is growing rapidly [16].…”

“…The detection limits obtained in this work were better than previous results with similar techniques, possibly due to the lower background offered by DRC. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Determination of iodine and bromine species in water and urine samples…”
