Sensorless speed control of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor, basically a combined control‐observer design, plays a crucial role in several industries, including electrical and aerospace applications. The key idea is to use only electrical (current) sensors and the remaining mechanical states (speed and rotor position) to be estimated using square‐root extended filter (SREF) for a BLDC motor. These estimated states are then fed‐back to the controller. In most of the designs, it is assumed that the BLDC motor plant parameters are constant; however, in reality, their parameters vary due to various intrinsic and extrinsic conditions. Compared to the conventional extended Kalman filter or its square‐root version, the proposed SREF for the BLDC motor has an inherent tendency to deal with parameter uncertainties and hence improves the robustness of the overall system. The robustness of the proposed scheme is tested at various reference speeds for a closed‐loop BLDC drive; further parametric uncertainties in stator resistance, detuning of inductance, and change in load are considered. The proposed control‐observer strategy using SREF is compared with its counterpart square‐root extended Kalman filter (SREKF), and the experimental results validate the efficacy of SREF for speed control of BLDC motor drive during the nominal conditions and in the presence of parametric uncertainties.

Over the past few years, due to an aging population and a longer life expectancy, traditional high-oil, high-calorie, and high-temperature culinary concepts have been widely replaced by healthier, low-temperature heating methods. However, while the key device of the Sous-Vide heating system ordinarily operates at full power to achieve the target temperature, pump speed control is not currently considered within the water heating and circulating system framework. This study develops a model for a water heating and circulating system and examines the characteristics of the lowest power point and pump speed. Building upon these results, we present the LPPT control method as a means of optimizing input power for heating. The effectiveness of this method is supported by simulations and experiments, which demonstrate a significant reduction in energy consumption. The control concept calculates the real-time input power based on the input voltage and current, and it can achieve the most efficient input power by perturbing the pump speed. It is demonstrated that applying LPPT to daily pot capacity reduces the Sous-Vide Cooker’s input power by up to 17% and achieves efficiency optimization control by removing the need to calculate the foods and other parameters of the water heating and circulating system environment.

The agricultural sector emphasizes sustainable development and energy efficiency, particularly in optimizing water pumping systems for irrigation. Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are the preferred prime mover over induction motors due to their high efficiency in such applications. This article details the rotor design and analysis of an energy-efficient BLDC motor with specifications of 1 hp, 3000 rpm, and 48 V, specifically tailored for a centrifugal monoset pump for irrigation. The focus lies in achieving optimal energy efficiency through grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm in the rotor design to determine optimal dimensions of the Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnet as well as its grade. The finite element method analysis software, MagNet, is used to model and analyze the BLDC motor. The motor parameters, such as speed, torque, flux functions, temperature, and efficiency, are analyzed. For performance comparison, the same model with different magnet models is also analyzed. Validation via 3D finite element analysis highlights improvements in magnet flux linkage, stator tooth flux density, and rotor inertia with increased magnet thickness. Simulation results affirm the consistent performance of the designed BLDC motor, preferably when efficiency is increased. This efficiency and the constant speed lead to an improvement in the overall conversion efficiency of 7% within its operating range, affirming that the motor pump system is energy-efficient.
