Determinants of vision function related quality of life of patients undergoing unilateral cataract surgical services in charitable hospitals in India: a multicentre prospective cohort study

Abstract: Background: Cataract is the leading cause of avoidable blindness in developing world, including India. The objective of this study is to measure the changes in quality of life (VRQoL) after cataract surgery and identify the predictors of an improvement in these outcomes. Methods: A multi-center prospective, longitudinal cohort study was conducted. At baseline patients aged ≥18 years with first-eye cataract were interviewed about VRQoL. Six months’ later participants were re-interviewed at their residences. Mult… Show more

“…Regaining functional independence was previously reported to be strongly associated with significant improvements in the quality of life, including better psychological outcomes. 53 , 54 With about two-thirds of the sample engaged in some form of active work, it is understandable that vision restoration post-surgery is associated with reduced psychological distress. This suggests that increased engagement in work may lead to increased self-efficacy and satisfaction, which, in turn, improve psychological well-being.…”

“…Sample size calculations were powered to detect a 10% improvement in VFQoL 6 months postcataract surgery based on previous study findings. [ 8 , 11 ] The mean VFQoL scores decreased from 76.65 before surgery to 68.5 at follow-up,[ 8 , 11 ] with two-sided statistical significance of 5% and 90% power, 32 patients would be required from each participating hospital with a cumulative sample of 575 participants from all 17 participating hospitals. This was increased to 747 to account for a 30% loss to follow-up in a longitudinal study.…”

“…This scale was previously used to assess VFQoL in ophthalmic patients suffering from cataracts including among the Indian adult populations. [ 8 , 11 ] The WHO/PBD VF20, was translated into the local languages for use by the researchers, and then was back-translated and field-tested to ensure proper readability. If the option on visual task was not applicable, it was also mentioned.…”
