Determinants of the incidence of non-academic staff in European and US HEIs

Abstract: In this article, we contribute to the scant literature covering quantitative studies on the determinants of the non-academic staff incidence in higher education institutions by analysing how the proportion of non-academic staff is related to key features such as size, prestige, year of foundation and financial structure of universities. We apply nonlinear regression analysis to compare HEIs across Europe and the USA, taking into account time and cross-country heterogeneity of the two balanced panel datasets co… Show more

“…Scientific performance is influenced by various factors and by the political-institutional context. Without claiming to be exhaustive, the available funding and infrastructures, the complementarity and substitutability of other activities carried out -such as teaching and the so-called "third mission"-, the contribution provided by the technical and administrative staff of the university (Avenali et al, 2022), are some of the factors that influence the performance of research, in addition to scientific merit and individual capabilities of academic staff.…”

“…The first trend is defined by the introduction of process standards in teaching tasks. This trend reflects HEIs' move toward what one researcher to as machine bureaucracies (Mintzberg 1979), and involves both the extension of the technostructural units (Rhoades and Sporn 2002)-which are the ones responsible for setting the standards-and the reinforcement of their authority at HEIs (Szekeres 2011;Avenali et al 2022;Briody et al 2022). The standardisation of procedures is generally linked to the formalisation of relationships inside organisations and an increase in the paperwork that lecturers are required to do, together with the need to have more admin staff (Newton 2002;Coccia 2009).…”
