Tef is the most important food and cash crop for more than 70 million people. It is the second-largest crop in terms acreage, but its average productivity is lower compared to other that may arise from different factors. Therefore, this research was intended to assess technical, allocative and economic efficiency of tef producers, and factors affecting technical inefficiency of tef producers using primary data collected from 472 tef producers from Ejersa Lafo district, Oromia, Ethiopia. The result of the stochastic frontier model and Cobb-Douglas production function revealed that the mean technical, allocative, and economic efficiency scores were 80.85%, 88.91% and 71.89% respectively. The result also revealed that all the included production variable; land, labor, fertilizer, chemicals, seed, and size of the plot allotted for tef significantly affected yield per hectare. Moreover, sex, education, experience in tef production, age of the head, distance from farmers' training center and dependence ratio were the variable significantly affected technical inefficiency of teff producers. The conclusion from these results is that there is a room for farmers to reallocate their resources and achieve higher tef yield per hectare by 19.15%, and minimize their cost of tef production per hectare by 28.11%.

Current knowledge on product marketing in Ethiopia is poor and inadequate for designing and implementing policies to overcome problems in the marketing system. This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing the market participation decision of smallholder haricot bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) farmers in Northwest Ethiopia. Survey data were collected from 312 smallholder farmers and analyzed using Heckman's two-step econometric model that estimates probit model in the first step and regression model with the parameters estimated using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method in the second step. The educational status, non-farm income from nonfarm employment, number of extension contacts, gender, improved seed use, chemical fertilizer, and farmers' perception of land degradation were the significant variables affecting the market participation decision of smallholder farmers. The amount of haricot bean output supplied to the market were influenced by age, experience, livestock holding, nonfarm income, extension contacts, gender, market access, and membership in marketing association. Participation in the market can be improved by providing training and education regarding the production and marketing of haricot bean output and increasing farmers' contact with extension agents.

Enhancing the productivity of crops through the adoption and uptake of technologies improves farmers' socio‐economic status through increased market participation. However, smallholder farmers in Sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) face a myriad of challenges that make it difficult for them to access and participate in the output markets. Like most SSA countries, the uptake of improved technologies is still low in Malawi. This paper examines the relationship between uptake of improved potato seed and donor‐funded training on market participation. Using secondary data from 393 potato farmers in Malawi, the study applied a triple‐hurdle model to examine the extent to which such interventions and other socio‐economic and institutional factors influence market participation. The results showed that male‐headed farm households, more experienced farmers, and those who participated in CIP‐led training were likely to market their potato output. Further, farmers closer to urban centers, those with off‐farm income, those who had participated in potato training, use of improved potato seed and quantity of output positively influenced the decision to sell in high‐value markets such as supermarkets. On the other hand, land size, ownership of transport equipment, group membership, and access to credit had positive effects on the amount of potato sold while distance to the markets reduced the quantity sold. Based on these findings, there is a need to set up a seed system within the local communities where farmers can easily access the seeds. Additionally, there is a need for a collaborative effort between public and private sector stakeholders to invest in the production of improved potato seeds that would help to address the shortfall in supply. Finally, institutional support interventions that utilize farmer groups as a key entry point in sustaining training on improved potato seed, relaxing credit constraints and promoting diversification into off‐farm enterprises would enhance potato production and marketing.This article is protected by copyright.
