Determinants of survival in AIDS patients on antiretroviral therapy in a rural centre in the Far‐North Province, Cameroon

Abstract: Summaryobjective To analyse the outcomes of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in routine conditions in a rural hospital in the Far-North province of Cameroon. conclusion This study confirms the clinical benefit of ART programs in a remote and resourceconstrained setting operating in routine conditions. The challenge ahead is to secure earlier access to ART and to maintain its longer-term benefit.

“…This finding largely deviated from the finding of other studies in Tanzania [8] and Cameroon [4]. Along with other methodological and study set up differences, the sample size, the longer follow-up period, time of ART initiation and treatment change may enlarge the difference of survival probability.…”

“…Recommendations are made for further expansion and sustainability of the ART scale-ups [3]. The clinical benefit of ART for AIDS patients, in terms of mortality reduction and improved quality of life, is well established but shows regional variations, with higher case fatality rates in poor countries [4].…”

“…Below these values for HIV positive patients are signs for requiring ARVs. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) provides guidelines on using ARVs and other HIV medicines to treat HIV infection (Sieleunou and Souleymanou, 2009 (Lichterfeld and Rosenberg, 2011). A CD4 increase is a sign of immune system recovery.…”
