Determinants of students’ idealistic and realistic educational aspirations in elementary school

Abstract: Although the social stratification of educational aspirations is well documented for parents and adolescents, current educational inequality research largely ignores the perspective of children. To learn more about the involvement of children in the emergence and reproduction of social disparities, we examine children's educational aspirations during elementary school. Based on the Wisconsin model, rational choice approaches, and the theory of cultural reproduction, our explorative investigation aims to identi… Show more

“…Therefore, aspirations should be higher than expectations overall. Empirically, it has been shown that aspirations vary by socioeconomic status and immigration background (Gölz and Wohlkinger 2019;Stocké 2013;Zimmermann 2019;cross-sectional, e.g. Chykina 2019), as do expectations (Salikutluk 2016;cross-sectional, e.g.…”

“…Likewise, there was no significant impact of mathematics teachers’ perceptions of educational values and the role of teachers on teaching methods. This result may be due to self-realization of educational values as teachers to impart moral, ethical, and disciplinary values which are sometimes considered more idealistic than realistic [ 77 ]. However, the nature of curriculum and functions of schools as perceived by the mathematics teachers were found to be significant predictors of their self-reported teaching methods.…”

“…Some studies indicate that significant others such as parents exert less influence on student expectations in strongly differentiated educational systems than in more comprehensive systems, as expectations are strongly determined by track placement (Buchmann and Dalton, 2002;Buchmann and Park, 2009;Yuchtman and Samuel, 1975;Parker et al, 2016). However, studies conducted in the German context have repeatedly shown that parental expectations are important determinants of student expectations both in primary and in secondary school (Gölz and Wohlkinger, 2019;Zimmermann, 2020Zimmermann, , 2018. Second, especially early in students' academic careers when students themselves cannot yet oversee their educational futures, parental expectations play an important direct role in education-related decisionmaking and other educational outcomes net of their influence on student expectations (Gölz and Wohlkinger, 2019;Schneider, 2011).…”
