“…The decision to admit once a person is in the ED is based on a complex interplay of a number of factors that were not measured in this study. Factors reported in the general population that have not yet been studied in the ID population include availability of beds (Mattioni et al, 1999;Mulder, Koopmans, & Lyons, 2005;Streiner, Goodman, & Woodward, 1975), time of day of visit (Mattioni et al, 1999;Rabinowitz, Massad, & Fenning, 1995;Streiner et al, 1975), training level of medical staff (Fichtner & Flaherty, 1993;Meyerson, Moss, Belville, & Smith, 1979), and family interest in admission (Mattioni et al, 1999;Mulder et al, 2005;Rabinowitz et al, 1995). Future research with a larger sample is needed to closely examine the variables that medical staff consider in their decision to admit patients with ID.…”

“…Despite the availability of many descriptive studies on psychiatric hospitalizations [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] few have worked with large and representative samples collected from large regions involving more than one hospitalization unit, [19][20][21] thus providing a more encompassing view of the mental health network.…”

“…Moreover, no information is available about the characteristics of admissions to Italian private in-patient facilities, and only a few studies have investigated the variables affecting the likelihood of hospital admission (Mattioni et al 1999 ;Amaddeo et al 2001 ;Hogson et al 2001 ;Magliano et al 2004).…”
