A tanulmány a kultúra, a gazdasági növekedés és az intézmények viszonyát vizsgáló irodalomból vezet le hipotéziseket a piaci eszmék (beliefs), a piaci intézmények és a termelékenység viszonyára vonatkozóan, és országkeresztmetszeti adatokon teszteli azokat. Rámutat egyrészt, hogy a három tényező ok-okozati kapcsolatára felírható négy hipotézis mindegyikének van közgazdasági irodalma, amennyiben a piaci eszméket a kultúra részének tekintjük. Másrészt, azt kihasználva teszteli a hipotéziseket országkeresztmetszeti adatokon, hogy azok különböző változókat tekintenek exogénnek. A piaci eszmék mércéi a World Values Survey egyéni adatain futtatott regressziókban szereplő ország-dummyk koefficiensei. A teszt azon két hipotézisnek ad igazat, miszerint az intézmények exogének, nem a piaci eszmék. Nemcsak azért nem, mert már legalább Weber (1995/1905) munkájáig vezethető az a gondolat, hogy a kultúrának a gazdasági fejlődésben meghatározó szerepe van. Azért sem új, mert a kérdést tárgyaló, a mainstream közgazdaságtanból ismert kvantitatív eszközöket használó irodalom is több mint egy évtizede fejlődik.E tanulmány kiindulópontja az, hogy ebben a nehezen áttekinthető iroda lomban a kultúra alatt általában a meglehetősen mélyen gyökerező hitet, erkölcsöket, morális szabályokat szokás érteni, nem a "sekélyesebb" és könnyebben változó eszméket (beliefs). Ennek az egyik oka valószínűleg az, hogy az eszmék nem intézmények a szó általánosan elfogadott north-i értelmében (North 2010(North /1990: még a tág értelemben sem értelmezhetők olyan játékszabályokként, amelyek a szereplő kifizetéseit

Complexity theory allows for a non-equilibrist approach to the economy, an approach that is shared by new institutional economics. Drawing on lessons from both schools of thought, this paper examines institutions as their own complex adaptive systems, even as they are nested in larger institutional systems and the broader economy. Tracing the evolution of an economy as the sum of its institutional parts, I examine the idea of development as the improvement of institutions. The key finding of this examination is that some aspects of complexity theory, relying on institutional and Austrian approaches, actually come full circle to a neoclassical prescription of laissez-faire in regard to institution-building. Given the complexity of both institutions and institutional systems, it is may be more important to remove political and other barriers from the path of institutional development than to actively engage in institution-building in order to encourage development. This too, unfortunately, faces challenges as a result of complexity.

Abstract:The transition from communism to capitalism was necessarily accompanied by a sudden and abrupt increase in the financialization of society. This increase occurred in an environment that, even now, still has little experience with or expertise in financialization. Given that financialization occurred simultaneously with the growth and evolution of other political and economic institutions, the question arises: What was the effect on these other nascent institutions like property rights? This article empirically analyzes the relationship between financialization and property rights in transition countries. Using a unique monthly database of twenty transition countries over a period from 1989 to 2012, this article finds that the influence of financialization depends on which definition of "financialization" is used. In particular, increases in basic financial intermediation improved property rights. However, higher-order "financialization," proxied here by the size of capital markets and the wages in the financial sector, appeared to have a negative impact on the development of broad-based property rights in transition.
