Determinants of Physical Activity in America: A First Characterization of Physical Activity Profile Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)

Abstract: The results presented in this study suggest that the method of multiple regression and heat map visualization can generate insights otherwise hidden in large datasets such as NHANES. A review of the provided heat maps reveals the trends discussed previously involving demographic, anthropometric, comorbidity, and behavioral variables. It also demonstrates the power of accelerometry to expose alterations in PA. Ultimately, this study provides a US population-based norm to use in future studies of PA.

“…Measures of physical activity and sedentary behavior have progressed from simple dichotomy (active vs. inactive) to self-reported frequency and duration, and more recently to accelerometer-based measures. 3,4 Typically, accelerometer output is summarized as total time in sedentary behavior, light, moderate, and vigorous physical activity over the course of the monitoring period (usually assessed per week). 4 However, in addition to the cumulative amount, the manner in which physical activity and sedentary behavior are accumulated may be important.…”

“…Also, the greater intervention benefit in those reporting lower annual incomes is significant because lower socioeconomic status is associated with less physical activity and participation in physical activity behavior change interventions [21, 39]. Further research to replicate this finding and identify potential key intervention components responsible for this benefit is warranted.…”

“…Both the intensity of PA and the total amount of energy spent are lower in women than in men. In addition, compared with men, woman spend a greater proportion of time engaged in sedentary and light activities and less time engaged in more strenuous (moderate and intense) PA [32,33]. Furthermore, women's blood pressure is also in uenced by estrogen levels, menstrual cycle, and fertility [34].…”
