Determinants of patient adherence: a review of systematic reviews

Abstract: Purpose: A number of potential determinants of medication non-adherence have been described so far. However, the heterogenic quality of existing publications poses the need for the use of a rigorous methodology in building a list of such determinants. The purpose of this study was a systematic review of current research on determinants of patient adherence on the basis of a recently agreed European consensus taxonomy and terminology. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, IPA, and PsycINFO were sys… Show more

“…Antihypertensive adherence might be a particular concern for older adults who have multiple chronic conditions 4, 5, 6, 8, 20. Many studies have examined major barriers and predictors of nonadherence among hypertensive patients,5, 7, 9, 11, 44, 45 and some focused on older adults 6, 46. Potential barriers to adherence among older adults can be classified into 3 categories: (1) patient‐related factors, including sociodemographics, psychosocial factors, comorbidities, cognitive ability, and health beliefs; (2) medication‐related factors, including the number of medications taken, adverse side effects, and complex medication regimens; and (3) other factors, including the patient‐prescriber relationship, access to medication and cost, and social support 6, 46.…”

“…Whether related to the pharmacological action of a medication or not, side effects can reduce patient well‐being and be a cause of patient non‐adherence (Ammassari et al ., 2001; Kardas, Lewek, & Matyjaszczyk, 2013), both of which can lead to a significant cost to health services (National Institute For Health and Clinical Excellence, 2009). To reduce the negative impact of side effects, it is important to understand more about their causes.…”

“…Reasons for nonadherence among patients with BD include the following: a denial of the diagnosis, especially in those with predominant mania; a lack of belief that the medications being offered are necessary or effective; and a wish to avoid the real or imagined adverse effects of medications (Devulapalli et al., 2010). Additional practical factors, including poor access to health care and limited resources to support treatment costs, can also affect adherence (Kardas, Lewek, & Matyjaszczyk, 2013). …”
