Determinants of Obesity in the Hispanic Preschool Population: An Integrative Review

Abstract: Public health nurses can work with communities to promote physical activity and safe outdoor places for exercise. In addition, they can advocate for the availability of healthy food choices in neighborhood schools. Maternal feeding practices, acculturation, and the child's environment require further research.

“…33 For example, although we did not find a significant relationship between environment and PA, several studies have documented such an association. Preschoolers in neighborhoods with less safe streets, in terms of high rates of pedestrian-automobile injuries, had decreased amounts of PA and greater skinfold thickness.…”

“…Despite the well-documented benefits of PA, children’s PA levels have declined over the past decades, with most children in the United States not getting the recommended 60 min of PA daily [ 11 , 12 ]. Physical inactivity is even a greater problem among racial/ethnic minority children in the United States, with a greater prevalence of physical inactivity among Hispanic children than non-Hispanic white children [ 13 - 15 ]. Therefore, it is essential to understand the factors that influence Latino children’s PA and sedentary levels to address disparities in PA and obesity rates among this population group.…”

“…Encouraging adequate levels of physical activity (PA) in pre-schoolers is important for health in childhood and across the life-span ( Adamo et al, 2014 , Carson et al, 2016 , Innella et al, 2016 , Telama et al, 2014 ). Unfortunately, the prevalence of pre-schoolers meeting the current guideline of three hours of PA per day ( Pate & O’Neill, 2012 ) is typically low worldwide, ranging from as little as 5% to around 50% ( Cardon and De Bourdeaudhuij, 2008 , Hinkley et al, 2012 , Pate et al, 2015 , Pujadas Botey et al, 2015 ).…”
