Determinants of maternal near miss at tertiary care hospital: a retrospective study

Abstract

Background: Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is one of the complications of pregnancy that poses serious maternal, fetal, and neonatal health risks. The prevalence varies in different populations and countries and the etiology is multifactorial. The aim and objective of the study was to find out the association between various presumed etiologies and to establish their significance as risk factors for premature rupture of membranes. Methods: A hospital based observational study carried out on 60 pregnant women attending emergency and OPD with complaints of leaking per vaginum. Detailed history was taken from all the patients followed by thorough examination. All the data was obtained and results analyzed and conclusions made. Results: In the present study, out of the 60 women, 38 had PROM and among those, 73.1% belonged to lower socio-economic status, 71.1% were multigravida, the mean BMI was 19.12 kg/m2, mean hemoglobin was 9.98 g/dl, 30 had a history of vaginosis and 13 had a history of threatened abortion in this pregnancy. Conclusions: The present study showed that lower socioeconomic status, multiparity, low BMI, anemia, history of vaginosis and threatened abortions are risk factors for premature rupture of membranes.
