Determinants of left ventricular mass in obesity; a cardiovascular magnetic resonance study

Abstract: Background: Obesity is linked to increased left ventricular mass, an independent predictor of mortality. As a result of this, understanding the determinants of left ventricular mass in the setting of obesity has both therapeutic and prognostic implications. Using cardiovascular magnetic resonance our goal was to elucidate the main predictors of left ventricular mass in severely obese subjects free of additional cardiovascular risk factors.

“…Also, TAT correlated weakly with LV mass ( r  = 0.26; p  = 0.009). Both these relationships were weaker than those reported in the general population ( r  = 0.5 for lean body mass and r  = 0.6 for fat)5, 6 perhaps because chronic catabolic disease results in additional variation in organ mass not present in healthy individuals. We recently discussed that in human patients with chronic hypercatabolic diseases both atrophied and hypertrophied hearts could be significantly associated with severe muscle depletion 1.…”

“…15 Another study found that30 obese children aged 11.2 (SD 2.9) years had a mean left ventricular mass of 98.5 (36.4) g. 16 Left ventricular hypertrophy detected by echocardiography is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular disease. Obesity in children and adolescents is the main factor that determines left ventricular mass.…”
