Determinants of Innovation and Productivity in the Service Sector in Mexico

Abstract: Based on survey data about firms in Mexico this paper investigates the determinants of innovation, and the linkages between innovation and productivity in the services sector. We applied a three-stage Crépon-Duguet-Mairesse (CDM) econometric model; the use of manufacturing firms as benchmark helped to better appreciate our findings. The paper identified that a series of structural, performance, and behavioral factors increase a firm's propensity to invest in innovation, but some differences arise between servi… Show more

“…The available literature about innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging economies is limited to explore the determinants of innovation performance as well as innovation constrains (Álvarez and Crespi, 2015;Crespi and Zúñiga, 2012;De Fuentes et al, 2015;Kuznetsov and Dahlman, 2008;Santiago et al, 2016). In this regard, the modest academic contributions of this study are to: (i) contribute to the open innovation literature debate about the necessity of exploring the main effects produced by enterprises' selection of internal/external collaborations for the development of entrepreneurial innovations (Huizingh, 2011;p.…”

“…Most of existing papers focus on one or another category of determinants. For example, the linkages between innovation and productivity are underlined inter-alia by Álvarez, Bravo-Ortega & Zahler (2015) and De Fuentes, Dutrenit, Santiago & Gras (2015). While the first paper empirically analyzes the firm-level relationship between innovation and productivity in the Chilean service sector, the second one draws on survey statistics about firms in Mexico, acting in the services sector also.…”

“…The variables used in this analysis are based on consideration of previous work by Crespi and Zúñiga (2012), Crespi et al (2014), and De Fuentes et al (2015). Table A1 in the Appendix A contains the variable names, their descriptions and the equations in which they appear for the model.…”

“…The model draws on the seminal work of Heckman (1978), along with the later modification by De Fuentes et al (2015). The three-stage model explores the main factors underpinning a firm's decision to invest in innovation, and the intensity of the investment in innovation: (i) the first stage should correct for selection bias as not all firms engage in innovation; (ii) the second stage focuses on the innovation output, measured as product and process innovations; and, (iii) the third stage concentrates on the performance impact of innovation (on productivity) in firms.…”
