Determinants of infant nutrition status in rural farming households before and after harvest

Abstract: Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices determine infant growth, development and health. Despite global recommendations for exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months, adherence rates are low worldwide for different reasons, largely dependent on environment. In low-income countries, inappropriate IYCF leads to poor nutrition status. This study examined IYCF practices and nutrition outcomes in rural farming households in Tanzania before and after harvest. Mothers and their infants were recruited from two re… Show more

“…In a metaanalysis on the determinants of stunting and obesity among children in sub-Saharan Africa, Keino, Plasqui (20) demonstrated higher prevalence of stunting among boys than girls, con rming what was reported by Wamani,Astrom (21). The similar ndings have recently been observed in Tanzania (22) and Ethiopia (23). The differential sex growth may be related to differences in feeding and care practices for boys and girls or morbidity, the former was observed among Senegalese children younger than three years (24).…”

“…As a result, many small-scale farmers in developing regions are experiencing diminishing terms of trade from agriculture (Henegedara, 2016). When commodity prices rise, consumers who spend a large proportion of their disposable income (often more than 30%) on food are exposed to greater risk of seasonal undernutrition (Muhimbula, Kinabo, & O'Sullivan, 2019;Dessys, Herrera, & de Hoyos, 2008). Farmers who are also consumers of what they produce are exposed to the risk of seasonal food and nutrition insecurity.…”
