Determinants of Health-Related Quality of Life in Long-Term Survivors of Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Abstract: In this study health-related quality of life (HRQL) in long-term survivors of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) was evaluated and the findings were analyzed using a conceptual model developed by Wilson and Cleary. A better understanding of the relationships between the variables explaining HRQL may improve care and rehabilitation of HL patients. The populations were long-term survivors of HL (n = 121) and a control group (n = 236). Participants were approached with one semi-structured interview, an extended version of t… Show more

“…The Pearson Mean, standard deviation and range of the SCT group of adults (n ¼ 53) as compared with average stature and weight (mean) of men and women in Sweden. 25 product moment correlation coefficient was used to assess construct validity by correlating SWED-QUAL and SOC-13 with HAD. Inter-correlation between health variables and the HRQL instrument and SOC and HAD were also examined.…”

“…A score sum of 8-10 indicates possible clinical problems, and greater than 11 suggests a clear clinical case. [23][24][25] In the current study, the Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.85 for the anxiety scale and 0.87 for the depression scale.…”

“…12 It has subsequently been successfully used in numerous studies of QoL as part of the SEIQoL-DW interview. 10,[13][14][15][16] In this study the direct-weighting procedure was applied to the five domains of QoL included in the FACT-P interview. Subjects were asked to weight the relative importance of each of these domains using a pie chart.…”

“…In a study out of the Southwest Oncology Group in the United States, a comparison of HRQOL in patients treated with either EFRT or CMT found persistent fatigue reported by survivors of each treatment modality, but again without differences according to treatment. [87] Effects seem to wane as length of time post-treatment increases; HL survivor 10 years from treatment continue to report lower general health scores, but many specific QOL domains no longer differ between treated patients and age-matched controls. [88,89] …”

“…[86,87,90] Chronic fatigue is three times more likely in HL survivors than in age matched controls, and is less likely to be associated with poor mental health than in untreated patients who experience chronic fatigue. [89,91] Retrospective studies have attempted to characterize pre-existing risk factors that can predict post-treatment chronic fatigue, and reports have implicated B symptoms at diagnosis, social isolation, and presence of treatment-related pulmonary toxicity.…”
