Abstract:The present study examines pesticide use in producing multiple food crops (i.e., rice, yam, and cassava) and identifies the range of socio-economic factors influencing pesticide use by 400 farmers from Ebonyi and Anambra states of Southeastern Nigeria using a Tobit model. Results reveal that 68% of the farmers grew at least two food crops. Overall, 41% of the farmers applied pesticides in at least one food crop, whereas 70% of the farmers producing both rice and yam applied pesticides. Pesticide use rates and costs vary significantly amongst farmers producing different food crops and crop combinations. Pesticide use rate is highest for producing yam followed by cassava estimated at 1.52 L/ha costing Naira 1677.97 per ha and 1.37 L/ha costing Naira 1514.96 per ha. Similarly, pesticide use rate is highest for the farmers that produce both yam and cassava followed by farmers that produce both rice and cassava. The inverse farm size-pesticide use rate exists in the study areas, i.e., the pesticide use rate is highest for the small farmers (p < 0.01). Farmers seem to treat pesticides as substitutes for labor and ploughing services, indicated by the significant positive influence of labor wage and ploughing price on pesticide use. Increases in yam price significantly increase pesticide use. Rice production significantly increases pesticide use, whereas cassava production significantly reduces pesticide use. Male farmers use significantly more pesticides. Farming experience is significantly positively related to pesticide use. Policy recommendations include land reform policies aimed at increasing farm operation size and investment in programmes to promote cassava production to reduce pesticide use in food crop production in Southeastern Nigeria.

Dairy sector has important role in supporting the national economy and livelihood of milk producers. Milk producers are one of key actors that play great role along the dairy value chain in the study area. Milk producers' participation in milk and milk products marketing played roles in improving household welfare, and also means improved food security and reduced poverty. Though there are studies conducted on milk production, processing and utilization, there is insufficient information on determinants of milk producers'milk supply and milk value addition participation in Mecha woreda. Thus, this study was conducted in Mecha woreda with objectives of analyzing determinants of smallholder milk producers' participation decisions and intensity in cow milk supply and value addition. Formal survey techniques were employed to collect data. The data were collected from 200 milk producers using systematic random sampling techniques. Bivariate probit model was employed for participation decisions while recursive bivariate tobit model was used to analyze determinants of participation intensities. The econometric model result revealed that age of household head, number of local cows owned, distance of dairy products market, household milk consumption, family size, dairy farm experience, milk yield size per day, and membership in dairy cooperatives were influential variables that affected milk supply participation decision significantly. The household land size, milk consumption, distance of dairy market, milk yield per day, cooperative membership and milk market experience affected milk supply participation intensity significantly. Value addition participation decision was influenced by land size, distance of market and value addition experience positively and significantly. Distance of dairy product market, dairy farm experience, and membership in dairy cooperatives influenced value addition participation intensity significantly. In this study, improving market access by increasing number of dairy cooperatives, road and infrastructures, upgrading traditional milk products, introducing labor saving technologies, and empowering cooperatives and producers are recommended to increase smallholders' participation in dairy products marketing.

This paper attempted the nexus of food production and consumption, and determinants of food consumption in Gudo Beret watershed, central highlands of Ethiopia. The study used cross-sectional data collected from 211 randomly selected households through interview. Descriptive statistics and linear regression were the key analytical techniques. Results revealed that households produced a gross yield of 1.5 ton and a net food supply of 1.1 ton per household which was equivalent to 274 kg of grain per adult per annum. The average food demand per capita was 323.8 kg per adult. It implies food production was inadequate for food consumption. Sex of household head being male, livestock holding, inorganic fertilizer, total land size, and market distance affected household food consumption positively whereas household size had negative impacts on household food energy. One of the current themes of the food systems is balancing food production and consumption. The government of Ethiopia should deliberate population policy with the intention that the rising population need to have adequate subsistence. In addition, women empowerment can enable them access to and control over food resources.
