Determinants of Food Crop Diversity and Profitability in Southeastern Nigeria: A Multivariate Tobit Approach

Abstract: Abstract:The present study jointly determines the factors influencing decisions to diversify into multiple food crops (i.e., rice, yam and cassava) vis-à-vis profitability of 400 farmers from Ebonyi and Anambra states of Southeastern Nigeria using a multivariate Tobit model. Model diagnostic reveals that the decisions to diversify into multiple crops and profits generated therefrom are significantly correlated, thereby justifying use of a multivariate approach. Results reveal that 68% of the farmers grew at le… Show more

“…For example, 18% of the farmers produced 'only cassava' with lowest average farm size of only 0.53 ha, whereas the proportion of 'only rice' or 'only yam' producers are even lower but with relatively larger farm sizes. This implies that small farms with their tiny farm size can afford only two crops, whereas large farms seem to grow all three crops due to command over a larger cultivated area [14]. Not only the proportion of farmers vary by cropping portfolio, but also the average farm-size varies significantly by crop combinations (Table 3).…”

“…For instance; Yoo (2005) applied bivariate Tobit to identify determinant of household bottled water and water purifier expenditures; and Kubanychbekova (2013) also applied to identify factors affecting parents' time allocation for children. Zhang et al (2017) used multivariate tobit to identify the effect of off-farm employment on forestland transfers in China; Rahman and Chima (2016) used multivariate Tobit to identify determinants of food crop diversity and profitability in southeastern Nigeria. Therefore, simultaneous (recursive) bivariate Tobit was used to estimate the parameter to account for the potential interdependent, endogenous and censored issues.…”

“…With the aim of receiving money, those households are expected to sell farm products for their habits. Proximity to the market facilitates selling of farm products (Rahman and Chima, 2016). Contrary to near residents, households situated relatively far from the local market may hoard crop products for their subsistence food requirements.…”
