Determinants of energy consumption and exposure to energy price risk: a UK study

Abstract: In this study, we examine the drivers of household energy consumption with a view towards gauging which households are particularly vulnerable to energy price risk. We specifically investigate the relative importance of household socioeconomic characteristics versus dwelling characteristics in explaining per capita gas consumption for space heating. The study draws upon a large random sample of households from the English Housing Survey (EHS) to understand the importance of, and interaction between, household … Show more

“…The explicative variables have been selected taking the indications coming from the EU Energy Poverty Observatory, the scientific literature ( Betto et al, 2020 ; Fuerst et al, 2020 ; Nagay and Korpysa, 2020) and other relevant aspects (such as time span and data availability for the EU-MS) into account. For the 2007–2018 time span, 26 time series have been selected.…”

“…The study documented that renewable energy incorporation in industrial development ensures higher productivity with economic sustainability. Furthermore, another line of studies is available in the literature focusing on determining the determent of energy consumption in the economy (Rabab Mudakkar et al, 2013;Azam et al, 2016;Sineviciene et al, 2017;Fuerst et al, 2020).…”

“…More time indoors provides more time for appliance and water use and an increased need for heating, leading to increased electricity, gas and water usage when the house is occupied than when unoccupied [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. During the containment measures in response to COVID-19 across a range of countries, national electricity consumption rates decreased overall, particularly on weekdays, due to lack of commercial demand [ 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”
