Determinants of Electric Car Sales in Europe

Abstract: This article deals with determining statistically significant factors affecting the sale of battery electric vehicles in different European countries. Typical representative countries were selected on the basis of cluster analysis. The input data for multiple regression models and vector autoregressive models include data for the last decade and thus essentially cover the complete history of the electric car market. Attention is paid not only to the European leader but also to countries with a lower share of e… Show more

“…Since our selected variables have different units, we used the standardised Euclidean distance to calculate the pairwise distance between pairs of observations. For this procedure, Ward's method for calculating the distance between clusters has proved to be particularly useful in practice, see for example, Kovárník & Staňková (2021). The cluster analysis was performed in the MATLAB computer system (version 2023a).…”

“…Finally, it should be stated that the automotive sector in Europe is currently at a crossroads, and it is not certain whether it will move towards full electrification or whether conventional vehicle types will persist for some time [18]. While electric vehicles are likely to significantly transform the automotive industry and cause some sectors to disappear, they will also open the door to new technologies and force existing sectors to innovate, for example, in terms of building charging infrastructure and reducing overall emissions in vehicle production and operation [19].…”
