Determinants of developmental progress in pre‐schoolers referred for neuro‐developmental diagnosis

Deterioration is most likely in children with chromosomal variations or neuro-motor disabilities, and regular reassessment of these children is recommended.

“…The Self-Administered Questionnaire for the Mother also contains questions on cosleeping status and total sleep duration in a 24-hour period. Given the well-known associations between education, income, sleep, and child development, 42,43 socioeconomic status (SES) was assessed (as reported by the mother during pregnancy). Statistics Canada's low-income cutoff (before tax) was used to assess income level (high versus low).…”

“…The Griffiths Mental Development Scale was developed and based on studies of child development, respecting sedimented developmental concepts and milestones. The disposition of the evaluation items as well as the analysis system allow for the diagnosis of changes in the areas of development in a specific character or global changes in development (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14) .…”

“…Studies of the early outcomes for children with ASD indicate improvement in developmental progress with intervention 2 . Conversely, developmental progress in children with comorbid neuro‐motor disabilities or with identified chromosomal variations on the other hand is reduced 7 . Improved long‐term adaptive outcomes in children with ASD are associated with early progress in language and higher intelligence 1 .…”
