Determinants of Demand for Fiji's Exports: An Empirical Investigation

Abstract: Fiji is no exceptin to the rule that exports are an important source of growth and development. In this light, it is important to know the determinants of exports. However, there is no empirical study on Fiji's export demand. This paper uses the modern econometric techniques—in particular, the autoregressive distributed lag approach to cointegration—to investigate whether the standard export demand variables, viz., trading partner income, export price, and competitor price, have a long‐run cointegration relati… Show more

“…Based on a study that investigates the long run relationship between imports and exports in two pacific island countries, the export and imports was co-integrated in both country (Narayan and Narayan , 2004). While in between the exports and imports in Korea, there was a positive co integration and coefficient on exports (Bahmani-Oskooee and Rhee ,1997) .…”

“…First, there needs to be only one cointegrating vector. Second, the explanatory variables should not be cointegrated among themselves [31]. As usual when dealing with time series economic variables, we test for the order of integration of the series involved for future analysis.…”

“…If the estimated F statistics is greater than the upper bound, we reject null hypothesis of no co-integration. If the estimated F statistics is less than the bottom bound, there is no co-integration relationship between the series (Narayan and Narayan, 2004). If the calculated F statistics is between the lower and upper critical values, the result is inconclusive (Karagöl et.al.,2007).…”
