Determinants of COVID-19 vaccine fatigue

Abstract: There is growing concern that Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine fatigue will be a major obstacle in maintaining immunity in the general population. In this study, we assessed vaccine acceptance in future scenarios in two conjoint experiments, investigating determinants such as new vaccines, communication, costs/incentives and legal rules. The experiments were embedded in an online survey (n = 6,357 participants) conducted in two European countries (Austria and Italy). Our results suggest that vaccina… Show more

“…Mass media undoubtedly form part of this social context, and longitudinal analyses could thus help to understand why attitudes may change over time. Our analysis also speaks to the relevance of traditional mass media regarding willingness to vaccinate as well as the important function of journalistically edited media and their potential in shaping perceptions of the pandemic [36,37].…”

“…In the ongoing 2023/2024 winter, only 30% of seniors have received an additional booster dose as of February 4, 2024 44 . Effective communication and recommendations incentivizing vaccination are needed to overcome vaccine fatigue 45 , maximize booster coverage, and limit the significant hospitalizations that COVID-19 continues to cause.…”

“…1,2 The scarcity of an effective treatment and its virulence converted the vaccines into an essential tool to face this pandemic. 3 Vaccination provides the best way to protect against COVID-19 and its complications and has been widely available in many countries. 3,4 It is well known that there are different categories of vaccines, such as DNA, mRNA, inactivated, live attenuated, virion-like particle, viral vector, recombinant subunit, and synthetic peptide.…”
