“…A study which was conducted recently among female students in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania showed that deciding about condom use with a boyfriend was made by both partners or a female partner alone whereas deciding about condom use with a sugar daddy was predominantly made by the sugar daddy himself [22]. However, even though these and other correlates of condom use among women have been identified [29,30], to our knowledge, we are aware of no existing attempt so far that has assessed the relationship between condom negotiation and condom use among women in rural settings of Tanzania. Therefore, this study addresses this gap with the following objectives: (1) to determine the proportion of women with confidence to negotiate condom use with their sexual partners, (2) to describe the prevalence of condom use at the last sexual intercourse, and (3) to assess the linkage between condom negotiation and condom use among 15-49 year-old women in three districts (Rufiji, Kilombero and Ulanga) in Tanzania.…”

“…Recent investigations of the predictors of condom use have produced diverse findings [9] [14] . Education level, economic status, and age were all positively correlated with condom use [11] , [15] [17] . Exposure to prevention messages, while positively associated with condom use, is substantially influenced by sex, economic status, age difference between partners, and the length of the relationship [6] , [12] , [18] [20] .…”

“…The socio-demographic variables of more education (Baker et al, 2010; Bogale et al, 2010; Cherutich et al, 2008; Maharaj & Cleland, 2005; Msamanga et al, 2009), female gender (Papo et al, 2011; Schaalma et al, 2009), being unmarried (Bogale et al, 2010; Cherutich et al, 2008), older age (Cherutich et al, 2008) and non-Christian religion (Bogale et al, 2010; Maticka-Tyndale & Tenkorang, 2010) are positively associated with condom use. Whether they reflect life stage, such as age and marital status, or structural factors such as gender, education and religion, socio-demographics are difficult targets for short-term HIV prevention programs.…”
