“…Defining the units of measurement when testing the theoretical predictions will require careful consideration of the questions posed. The figure complements existing Venn diagrams, flow charts and other multi‐level representations of infant feeding influences (see Martens & Young 1997; Tiedje et al . 2002; Hector et al .…”

“…To our knowledge, this study is the first to examine relationships between intrapartum factors, infant characteristics, and immediate SSC in early breastfeeding initiation among 915 mother–newborn dyads in Singapore. We used a path analytic approach to evaluate interrelated study variables according to theoretical (Alberts, ; Kraemer, ; Martens & Young, ) and empirical evidence (Moore et al, ; Patel et al, ). This study showed that immediate SCC, mode of birth, duration of labour, and NICU admission were significantly associated with early breastfeeding initiation in the entire population, depicting that our results partially support the hypothetical model.…”

“…This model postulates that early initiation of breastfeeding is a dynamic multifactorial determined by intrapartum and neonatal factors and SSC. Obstetric procedure and physical condition of intrapartum women are directly associated with breastfeeding action (Martens & Young, ). After birth, infants learn survival behaviours, including searching, recognizing, apprehending, and suckling in a systematic manner (Alberts, ).…”

“…These include younger age, lower education and income, being a single parent and a current smoker [28-33]. Although many of these same women seem to be knowledgeable about the benefits of breastfeeding, young low-income women tend to be greatly influenced by the attitudes held by their social environment [34,35] as well as the attitudes and support, or lack of support, from their own mothers [30]. Many of these factors are difficult to modify and what is needed is a better understanding of why mothers with these characteristics make their decision to formula-feed in order to develop targeted interventions.…”
