Determinants of bone health in adults Polish women: The influence of physical activity, nutrition, sun exposure and biological factors

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the determinants of bone health in the group of women over 40 years old. Lifestyle factors such as past and present physical activity, past and present sun exposure, current dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D, nutritional status as measured by BMI, family history of osteoporosis and current hormonal status were analysed. Methods The study involved 500 women over 40 years old. All examined women was the same ethnicity-European origin. Methods used: densitometry method (D… Show more

“…Consequently, future studies are warranted to explore the differences and associations found in the present study using objectively measured physical activity levels. Furthermore, sun exposure questionnaires were not administered, and this variable could be correlated with BMD [ 68 ]. Moreover, limitations in the use of bone densitometry in childhood are related to the two-dimensional measurement of a three-dimensional structure in a growing skeleton.…”

“… 25 Melatonin influences bone metabolism by stimulating bone growth and inhibiting osteoclast activity, 26 and one study reported that decreased serum melatonin levels are associated with increased bone loss in postmenopausal female. 27 Although there are few data on sun exposure in terms of bone health, 28 it needs further study because its biological mechanism of action about bone is still unknown.…”

“…The study was conducted in all people using the same equipment by a team having the necessary quali cations and experience in the research with the above-mentioned method and apparatus. The scanner was calibrated daily against the standard calibration block supplied by the manufacturer to control for possible baseline drift [37].…”
