“…The majority of publications document the risk assessment for re-replacement for aortic prosthetic dysfunction. 6,9,11,13 The publications addressing bioprosthetic valve failure are Akins, 1 Bortollotti, 2 Glower, 7 McGiffin, 9 O'Brien, 14 Sundt, 12 Vogt, 6 and Jamieson 13 and colleagues. The publications by Tyers, 3 McGrath, 4 and Sener 5 and their colleagues access both bioprostheses and mechanical prostheses and the publications address re-replacement risk for mitral bioprosthetic structural valve deterioration.…”

“…Chronically, IS risk of MRep is low and antithrombotic treatment should be individualized (37). In older patients with MVRb and faster endothelial restoration (43,44), no excess embolic risk is noted Ͼ30 days and prolonged anticoagulation is of dubious benefit (45).…”

“…Therefore, early or late degeneration of bioprosthetic heart valves (BHV) resulting in stenosis, regurgitation, or combined failure and requiring reoperation is an increasing issue. In a long term follow up study of 1119 patients Glower et al reported incidence of reoperation for failing BHV of 5%, 10%, and 30% at 5, 10, and 15 years, respectively. Redo surgery in older patients with comorbidities for degenerated SHV is associated with a higher mortality and morbidity.…”
