Determinants in the number of staff in hospitals’ maintenance departments: a multivariate regression analysis approach

Abstract: To date, there are no broadly accepted or accurate models to determine appropriate staffing [levels] for clinical engineering departments (CEDs). The purpose of this study is to determine what the determinants of the staffing levels are (total number of full time equivalents (FTEs)) in CEDs in healthcare organisations. In doing so, we used a cross-sectional exploratory approach by using a multivariate regression model over a secondary source of data information from the AAMI Benchmarking Solutions-Healthcare T… Show more

“…Differences in the availability of healthcare resources, patient and provider cooperation, affect the quality of healthcare services and patient outcomes differently. Efficient management of resources and processes influence the quality of health services (Mosadeghrad, 2014;Persona et al 2008;Battini & Rafele 2008;Krot & Rudawska, 2017;Miguel Cruz & Guarín 2017;Gianino et al 2017). Many studies of amenable and preventable mortality and their determinants are based on the production function of health (Nolte & McKee, 2004).…”

“…One study by Ewing 8 suggests several different metrics including using 1000 PMs/BMET. Another study from Cruz and Guarín 9 suggests one BMET per 1083.72 devices, and a third by Wang et al 10 suggests 2.5 BMET/100 operating beds or 1 BMET/600 devices. There is a lack of comprehensive industry research in this area, and those that provide results may oversimplify and/or correct for known data issues.…”
