Background: Asthma is a chronic disease in children that significantly impacts their quality of life. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of yoga breathing exercises on the quality of life of children with asthma. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 84 children with asthma aged 5 - 11 years old were selected and nonrandomly divided into the control group (n = 42) and the intervention group (n = 42). Both groups completed the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 3.0 (the PedsQL 3.0) Asthma Module. Then, the intervention group performed yoga breathing exercises twice a day for 2 months in addition to receiving medical treatment at home, while the control group only received medical treatment. After 2 months, both groups completed the PedsQL 3.0 Asthma Module for the second time. Results: The mean score and standard deviation for the quality of life before the intervention were 69 ± 13.6 in the intervention group and 72 ± 12.2 in the control group (P = 0.29). After the intervention, the mean score and standard deviation for quality of life were 79.4 ± 9.1 in the intervention group and 72.7 ± 11.1 in the control group (P < 0.003). Conclusions: Yoga breathing exercises improved the quality of life in children with asthma. Therefore, these exercises are recommended as a complementary therapy for pediatric asthma.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) in children is a major respiratory inflammatory disease with a high incidence that is increasing yearly. In China, 54.93% of children with asthma have AR, which often requires synchronous treatment. House dust mites (HDMs) are common allergens that often cause attacks of AR and asthma. Reducing allergen exposure is one of the most important measures to control and treat AR and asthma attacks. Hestelia Mite Bait, containing 0.1% emamectin, is a new tool for trapping and killing dust mites, reducing the number of dust mites on mattresses and thereby potentially reducing stimulation by allergens and ultimately improving asthma and rhinitis symptoms. This single-centre, randomized, double-blind, cross-placebo trial will explore the improvement in AR in asthmatic children after dust mite exposure reduction. Methods: We will recruit 60 children (aged 3-12 years) who have been diagnosed with AR and asthma and are allergic to dust mites as confirmed by a serum allergen test. Participants will randomly receive the Hestelia Mite Bait intervention for 8 weeks and the placebo intervention for 8 weeks. There will be a 4-week washout period between the two interventions. The primary outcome is the visual analogue scale (VAS) score of AR symptoms; the secondary outcomes include the Rhinitis Control Assessment Test (RCAT) score, Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) score, changes in the dust mite level, drug usage for asthma and AR, Asthma Control Questionnaire-5 (ACQ-5) score, and frequencies of acute asthma attacks, emergency visits, and hospitalizations. Discussion: This study aims to scientifically and objectively evaluate the effects of mite bait on rhinitis and asthma improvement after dust mite exposure reduction and provides a convenient means for future prevention and treatment of allergic diseases involving the airways in children.

Objectives: In hospitalized and nonhospitalized children with asthma exacerbations, we evaluated the determinants of (a) prolonged cough on day-14 and (b) asthma quality of life (QoL) questionnaires for parents (PACQLQ) on day-21. We hypothesized that children with more severe acute asthma are more likely to have prolonged cough and/or poorer PACQLQ during the recovery phase. Design: Prospective cohort study performed during 2009-2011. Methodology: Two hundred and forty-four children aged 2-16 years presenting with acute asthma to the Emergency Departments of two hospitals were recruited. Clinical history, examination, baseline asthma severity, and acute asthma severity on presentation were documented. Validated daily cough diaries and weekly PACQLQ were recorded for 14 and 21 days, respectively. Results: 34.4% and 32.2% of children who returned the daytime and nighttime cough diaries respectively had a prolonged cough. Those on regular inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) were significantly more likely to have a daytime or nighttime cough score of ≥1 on day-14 (odds ratio [OR adjusted ] = 4.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.65, 13.35, p = .004 and OR adjusted = 2.65, 95% CI 1.05, 6.69, p = .040, respectively). PACQLQ on day-21 was significantly poorer in younger children (mean difference [MD] = −0.04 per year, 95% CI −0.08, −0.01, p = .016), those on ICS (MD = −0.31, 95% CI −0.52, −0.09, p = .005), leukotriene antagonists (MD = −0.42, 95% CI −0.83, −0.02, p = .040) and in those who had an unplanned visit for asthma on day-21
