Determinants and impact of the time to perform clean intermittent self‐catheterization on patient adherence and quality of life: A prospective observational study

Abstract: Aims: To measure the time required to perform clean intermittent selfcatheterization (CISC) in daily life and to assess its impact on adherence and quality of life. Methods: Patients performing CISC for more than 1 month were invited to participate. At home, patients were asked to complete a 1-day diary to assess the specific duration of the CISC (time from when the equipment and environment are brought together to perform CISC) and the next day to complete a second diary for the total duration of the CISC (st… Show more

“…First, two fixed time points were conducted to mimic catheter insertion (0 min) and withdrawal of the catheter after in vivo indwell time (2 min). On average, the time to perform intermittent catheterization is less than 2–3 min . However, the process of real-life drainage of urine from the urethra via intermittent catheterization has been reported to take up to 5 min .…”

“…On average, the time to perform intermittent catheterization is less than 2–3 min. 32 However, the process of real-life drainage of urine from the urethra via intermittent catheterization has been reported to take up to 5 min. 33 Moreover, Leroux et al (2021) investigated the time required to perform clean intermittent self-catheterization and reported durations ranging from 47 s to 11 min, 50 s. 32 In our proposed model, 2 min may be insufficient, or alternatively too long and not fully representative of the complete process for all IC users.…”

“…На практике у опытных пациентов на эту процедуру уходит столько же времени, сколько при привычном произвольном акте мочеиспускания без использования катетера. C. Leroux et al (2021), анализируя результаты опроса пациентов, осуществляющих ПК около 7 лет, установили, что время на катетеризацию составляло в среднем около 4 минут [17]. Ежегодно выпускаются разнообразные пособия для длительного использования уретральных катетеров как для пациентов, так и для младшего медицинского персонала.…”
