Determinant Factors of Successful Ex Situ Conservation of Lesser Bird of Paradise [Paradisaea minor Shaw, 1809]

Abstract: <p>Recently, the population of the lesser bird of paradise (Paradisaea minor Shaw, 1809) has been decreasing due to illegal hunting, illegal trading, and habitat destruction. Meanwhile, ex situ conservation efforts of this bird are lacked and very low in the success of breeding. The aims of this research were to identify and analyze the component that determines the successful ex situ conservation of the lesser bird of paradise. The study was conducted from March until May 2016 in the TMII Bird Park, Meg… Show more

“…Maintaining the humidity in the cage is also important because it could support the success of animal reproduction. Cita et al (2019) stated that in several cases in birds, such as the Bandung Zoo and Mega Bird and Orchid Farm (MBOF), the humidity will affect bird reproduction. This is because extreme fluctuations in humidity will reduce egg hatchability and affect breeding success so that birds will maintain body temperature to optimize biological activity.…”

“…The success of the captive breeding facilities is strongly influenced by the success in the adaptation process, including the efforts of managers in adjusting birds from nature to the captive environment as newly habitat of the species (Prayana et al, 2012). In general, the factors that influence the success of ex situ conservation include internal and external aspects of animal biology (Cita et al, 2019).…”
