Industrial symbiosis describes a regional inter-firm approach towards a more sustainable industry. However, the implementation of industrial symbiosis is hampered by a multitude of various barriers. Although prior work has dealt with identifying barriers, an encompassing overview is missing to date. Therefore, in this paper, barriers were identified by the means of a literature review and analyzed through qualitative content analysis. In total, 402 barriers for the implementation of industrial symbiosis were identified. They were grouped into nine categories: economic, technology, financial (hard, quantifiable factors); cooperation, management, knowledge, information (soft factors, which are difficult to quantify); policy/regulation, and public/market (contextual factors). The insights gained can be used to develop strategies and tools for further development and advancement of current industrial symbiosis practice to overcome existing barriers.

Industrial symbiosis (IS) is a key sub-field in industrial ecology. The field itself assists in developing strategies that support local and regional sustainable development. The evolution of IS is an important topic to be explored. In this paper, we use the system dynamics (SD) method to establish a model of the evolution of industrial symbiosis in the case of Hai Hua Industrial Symbiosis (HHIS). In this model, different scenarios for energy consumption, solid waste utilization, and wastewater utilization were set by changing the parameter values of certain input variables to analyze the evolution of HHIS. In addition, the drivers for IS evolution were investigated qualitatively in this study. The SD model was helpful for visualizing the effects and benefits of reducing the energy consumption, solid waste stock, and wastewater stock that were achieved by establishing symbiotic relationships during the evolution of IS. The results show that the optimization of energy and material flows and other symbiotic benefits can be achieved in HHIS. There are still some challenges that restrict the further evolution of HHIS. Some suggestions are proposed to promote its further evolution.

HEAVY METAL ACCUMULATION AND ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF ABSTRACTAntioxidant defense mechanisms are crucial for plants to survive under stress conditions. We investigated the capacity of a wild fern species, Nephrolepis biserrata, growing in the vicinity of industrial land to accumulate heavy metals, and assessed its antioxidative response under metal stress. The soils in this particular area were highly contaminated with zinc followed by lead and copper. As control, N. biserrata located 10 km away from the industrial area were collected and assessed. N. biserrata from the contaminated sites accumulated metals in their tissues in similar descending order of zinc>lead>copper. The values of bioaccumulation factor between 0 to 0.1 indicate N. biserrata as a moderate accumulator for the tested metals. For the enzymatic antioxidant assays, the activities of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase were significantly higher in N. biserrata from contaminated soil compared to control, while the activity of superoxide dismutase was not differ significantly in plants from both sites. We also detected higher contents of total phenolics and total flavonoids in N. biserrata collected from contaminated site compared to control. Our HPLC analysis revealed higher levels of myricetin and kaempferol in plant samples from the contaminated area. Our study verified the capacity of N. biserrata to scavenge oxygen radicals when exposed to heavy metal stress. Such ability to tolerate stressful condition suggests that the plant is a potential metal phytoremediator.
