Determinant factors and business strategy in a sustainable business model: An explorative analysis for the promotion of solid waste recycling technologies

Abstract: Innovation strategies for the promotion of solid waste recycling technologies include not only new technologies for resource utilization of solid waste but also sustainable business models to support the adoption of these technologies. This study presents how to incorporate the determinant factors affecting technology promotion and business strategy into a sustainable business model for the promotion of solid waste recycling technologies. A systematic literature review summarizes the determinant factors affect… Show more

“…The traditional linear consumption or “take‐make‐dispose” model where the companies extract materials that are used to produce the desired products, which are sold to the final consumer who discards them when they no longer serve their purpose (Figure 2) is not acceptable nowadays (Cui et al, 2022). In reality, linear economies are material and energy intensive, and their consumption pattern has huge environmental, economic, and social disadvantages.…”

“…In opposition to linear economies, a circular economy (CE) is a “system that is regenerative by design and replaces the ‘end‐of‐life’ concept with restoration, promotes the use of renewable energy, eliminates the use of toxic chemicals and aims to eliminate waste generation through the design of materials, products, systems and business models” (Cui et al, 2022). The main difference of CE versus the other strategies to reduce energy and materials consumption is the creation of circular loops of materials, energy and waste flows involving all activities (European Comission, 2020).…”

“…Food wastes can be generated at different stages of the food supply chain such as the initial agricultural phase, manufacturing processes, retailing and household consumption (Bhattacharya et al, 2021; Garcia‐Garcia et al, 2017; Yukesh Kannah et al, 2020). It has been argued that food could be wasted during this life cycle because of economic, societal or technological reasons (Cui et al, 2022; de Moraes et al, 2020). The European Council stresses that waste management should prioritise food waste practices such as its reusability and recycling and preferably recovering valuable materials (Huang et al, 2021).…”

“…The company will offer information to sorting centers and receive a commission [ 3 ]. Therefore, the “Internet + Recycling” companies will design a specific strategy based on sorting center costs [ 4 ], recycling channels [ 5 ], and value dimensions [ 6 ]. In this way, the company can improve its business competitiveness and reduce churn at the sorting center.…”
