In the Brazilian semi-arid region, small ruminants reared in the field, especially in the dry period of the year, may be subjected to thermal stress, which can compromise their homeothermy. This study aimed to evaluate the climatic indices, rectal temperature (R T ), surface temperature (S T ), thermal gradient between rectal and surface temperatures and the ambient temperature of Santa Inês sheep and Moxotó goats, reared in the Brazilian semi-arid region in two periods of the year (less hot and hot) and at three times (13, 14 and 15 h), using 24 animals, 12 of each breed, 6 males and 6 females of each species, grouped in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial scheme (species, genders and periods), with 6 replicates. Ambient temperature and black globe temperature and humidity index in the periods and times were above ideal for the species, with low relative humidity. In both periods, the means of R T remained within the normality standard for the species, but higher in sheep. S T remained high for the two species and higher in sheep at the times evaluated. The thermal gradients were below ideal, indicating damage to the physiological capacity of the animals to maintain homeothermy in the environment in which they were.

Este estudo verificou as características fisiológicas e reprodutivas de caprinos British Alpine nos períodos seco e chuvoso no semiárido paraibano. Foram utilizados seis caprinos da raça British Alpine, com idade entre dois a três anos. Todos os animais foram submetidos a um exame clínico geral seguido do exame andrológico. O experimento foi dividido em duas épocas, seca (setembro a dezembro) do ano de 2016 e chuvosa (abril a julho) do ano de 2017. Durante o período experimental foram registrados os dados climatológicos, por meio de um datalogger tipo HOBO com cabo externo acoplado ao globo negro, o datalogger foi programado, através de um software, para registrar os dados a cada hora, durante 24 horas, de todos os dias do experimento. As médias dos parâmetros fisiológicos, foram superiores na época seca para FR, TR, TSméd e TSmáx. Os valores do PE estão dentro das médias da faixa etária para a idade da espécie. Entre os parâmetros seminais, apenas o turbilhonamento ficou abaixo da média recomendada para a espécie. A média de defeitos espermaticos totais nas épocas não ultrapassaram os padrões seminais desejáveis para a espécie. Conclui-se que Caprinos da raça British Alpine criados no semiárido paraibano apresentaram baixo nível de estresse e boa adaptabilidade fisiológica às condições climáticas do semiárido nas diferentes épocas do ano (período seco e chuvoso). Os parâmetros reprodutivos avaliados sofrem influência negativa exercida pela temperatura ambiente na época seca que interferiram sobre os parâmetros seminais, apresentando uma maior porcentagem de patologias espermáticas.
