Detergents and surfactants: a brief review

Abstract: Since ancient times, human being has tried to find a way for cleaning clothes, house floor, agricultural tools and so on. In the present work, we briefly describe the history of detergents and the way that they developed. In addition we write about the components of powdered and liquid detergents and the components we produce and use in our detergents. All of the surfactants that are used in industrial applications are described and their synthesis is discussed.

“…Therefore, in future works, investigations into the synergies present in surfactant systems and their potential application may need to consider this concentration dependence, especially in cases where micellar structure and interactions need to be controlled. Furthermore, these finding are relevant to the design of multicomponent surfactant systems, extensively employed in a range of formulations, from detergents , to food and pharmaceutical products …”

“…Both also have many similarities regarding their molecular structure and how they clean the surfaces (Nurul Ika Amira, 2015). Practically, after the saponification process is made, which involves heating fats and oils and reacting them with a liquid alkali, the detergent is produced since the saponification process is part of the detergent formulation (Ranji et al, 2019;SDA, 1994;Tareila, 2004). Although people commonly refer to laundry detergent as soap, it differs from soap since there are certain major improvements in the ingredients of detergents.…”

“…The biggest part of the annual production volume of surfactants (46.3 %) is produced for household detergents (Ranji et al, 2019). Sophorolipids can be used as readily biodegradable, non-toxic, biobased, non-irritable, 'green' formulation agents in detergents and cleaning applications.…”
