Detector and telescope development for ProtoEXIST and fine beam measurements of spectral response of CZT detectors

Abstract: We outline our plan to develop ProtoEXIST, a balloon-borne prototype experiment for the Energetic X-ray Imaging Survey Telescope (EXIST) for the Black Hole Finder Probe. EXIST will consist of multiple wide-field hard X-ray coded-aperture telescopes. The current design of the EXIST mission employs two types of telescope systems: high energy telescopes (HETs) using CZT detectors, and low energy telescopes (LETs) using Si detectors. With ProtoEXIST, we will develop and demonstrate the technologies required for th… Show more

“…When triggered, this ASIC provides readout of a trigger signal, pixel channel number, and the amplified event signal [48]. This ASIC does not support multi-pixel readout, as only a single peak pixel value is recorded during multi-pixel events [120]. The amplified event signal is then digitized within the detector module to give a 0-4095 energy channel value that is output as list-mode data alongside a timestamp and pixel number [43,45].…”

“…The ASICs used by CZT-based focusing telescope experiments such as the High Energy Focusing Telescope (HEFT) and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) use capacitor banks to sample preamplifier outputs [10]. Another version of this ASIC known as the RadNet ASIC has been used for the Energetic X-ray Imaging Survey Telescope (EXIST) mission [27,28] as well as homeland security applications [12].…”

“…In this paper, we review our detector design and package concept and report the current development status of the program using our basic detector units. Hong et al (2005) outlined the initial detector plane design concept for ProtoEXIST1 [3]. Since then, we have made a few changes to improve our packaging concept to resolve practical concerns that became apparent during development.…”
