Detection of Subclinical Infection in Significant Breast Implant Capsules

Abstract: The pathogenesis of fibrous capsular contracture after augmentation mammaplasty is still debated. One hypothesis implicates low-grade bacterial infections as a cause. The presence of a staphylococcal biofilm in a patient with recurrent capsular contracture was previously reported. A comparative, prospective, blinded, clinical study of implants and capsules removed from patients with or without significant capsular contracture was conducted to investigate the association of biofilm contamination, breast implant… Show more

“…Then each of the plate was placed in a sterile tube with 20 mL phosphate-buffered saline and sonicated (Branson Ultrasonic Cleaner; Branson Ultrasonics, Danbury, CT, USA) at a frequency of 50 kHz for 5 min. Previous studies [29][30][31][32][33] have proven the efficiency of such ultrasonic treatment for removing any bacteria that attach to the plates without leading to the death of bacteria. After sonication, an aliquot of the solution was collected and submitted for further microbiologic culture (n = 200 for plates) and PCR processing.…”
