Detection of scales and its thickness determination in industrial pipes using Compton backscattering system

Abstract: The ability to detect and quantify scales in pipes has been an important yardstick for efficient transfer of fluids in domestic as well as in application related industries. Knowledge of different kinds of scales formed has become a precondition for trouble-shooting in operational lines. In this paper, collimated Compton backscattered gamma rays from a radioactive source have been used to inspect the scales by automatic scanning in steps along the axial direction of different pipes. The methodology has been ex… Show more

“…The gamma ray spectrometry system [9][10][11] consists of coaxial p-type HPGe detector attached to a 16K multichannel analyzer is used for spectral measurements. The detector when it has been procured has a resolution(FWHM) of 1.8 keV at 1332 keV 60 Co to a 3"X3" NaI(Tl) crystal, but now the resolution has slightly deteriorated due to its ageing.…”

“…A pulse height analysis system having a signal processor transforms pulses, records and stores in a computer-based MCA. The Wilkinson type analog to digital converter (clock rate of 100 MHz) is used to convert analog to digital signals and the datas are stored in 8192 sequential channels [9][10][11]. The FEP efficiency calibration has been carried out using Reference Gamma (RG) standard sources in 250ml geometry.…”

“…The Compton backscattering method is highly efficient when there is no access to either side of the pipe. Different studies have been carried out on the applications of this technique such as detecting the corrosion inside the pipes [10][11][12][13][14], measuring the thickness of the pipe walls [15], determining the wax thickness inside industrial pipes [16,17], and estimating the density of the materials [18].…”
