Detection of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia: two case reports

Abstract: Background Developing therapeutic strategies for a SARS-CoV-2 infection is challenging, but first the correct diagnosis has to be made. Unspecific upper and lower respiratory tract symptoms can be misleading; hence, a nasopharyngeal swab test with a real-time reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction is of great importance. However, early viral clearing jeopardizes a sound diagnosis of COVID-19. Case presentation We report on two Caucasian pa… Show more

“…The first clinical manifestation of SARS-CoV-2-associated COVID-19 disease in which cases were detected was pneumonia (Seibert et al. 2020 ). In symptomatic patients, clinical signs of the disease, such as cough, pyrexia, nasal obstruction, fatigue, and upper respiratory tract infections, usually begin in less than a week.…”

“…It is unclear whether this was a result of a decrease in the frequency of hospitalizations for other dermatoses or potentially more severe disease course due to restricted access to healthcare. Deaths in the course of erysipelas complicated by COVID-19 infection have been described in the literature (13). Given the additional risk factors in patients, it is uncertain to what extent erysipelas can be attributed to increasing the risk of a more severe course of COVID-19.…”
