COVID-19 is a virus that causes upper respiratory tract and lung infections. The number of cases and deaths increased daily during the pandemic. Once it is vital to diagnose such a disease in a timely manner, the researchers have focused on computer-aided diagnosis systems. Chest X-rays have helped monitor various lung diseases consisting COVID-19. In this study, we proposed a deep transfer learning approach with novel fine-tuning mechanisms to classify COVID-19 from chest X-ray images. We presented one classical and two new fine-tuning mechanisms to increase the model’s performance. Two publicly available databases were combined and used for the study, which included 3616 COVID-19 and 1576 normal (healthy) and 4265 pneumonia X-ray images. The models achieved average accuracy rates of 95.62%, 96.10%, and 97.61%, respectively, for 3-class cases with fivefold cross-validation. Numerical results show that the third model reduced 81.92% of the total fine-tuning operations and achieved better results. The proposed approach is quite efficient compared with other state-of-the-art methods of detecting COVID-19.

Infectious skin diseases constitute a significant public health problem. Despite the systematic development of many modern diagnostic and therapeutic tools, they still pose a serious challenge for clinicians. Due to their prevalence and mild course in most cases, they are often marginalized, which can delay their diagnosis and treatment initiation. Such an approach in more clinically advanced cases can have serious consequences, sometimes leading to tragic outcomes. This work presents a series of four cases of common infectious skin diseases with an unusually atypical clinical picture: the history of a 49-year-old female patient with recurrent erysipelas of the right lower leg co-occurring with a SARS-CoV-2 infection, a 75-year-old male patient with a generalized form of herpes zoster, a 38-year-old female patient with a complicated severe course of head lice, and a 34-year-old male patient with a severe form of post-steroid mycosis. In each of these cases, difficulties in making the correct diagnosis were highlighted, even though they represent some of the most common bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal dermatoses. The paper discusses the risk factors for these diseases, the pathophysiology of their atypical course, the effects and challenges in the therapeutic approach conducted. Infectious skin dermatoses require aggressive treatment and should never be underestimated.

The end of second decade in the 21st century witnessed a prominent disease outbreak caused by the novel coronavirus SARS‐CoV‐2 (including most diverse omicron subvariants), where the death toll crossed the boundary of 6.9 million across the globe by December 19, 2023. All spheres of central dogma of molecular biology and host‒pathogen interaction was explored to find ways in diagnostics, isolation, curtailment, and therapy. Above all, diagnostics and therapeutics against COVID‐19 took an enormous jump, which needs to be evaluated for accuracy and feasibility and requires serious compilation for current and future generations. With the same objective, this review encompasses the diverse ways including prevention practiced and proposed during the handling of this pandemic across the globe. It involves the role of mutations in viruses and subsequent epitope mapping with potential immune escape mechanisms of SARS‐CoV‐2 variants including the conservancy of T‐cell epitopes has also been highlighted. The efficacy in antigen/antibody‐based diagnostics, RT‒PCR‐ and NGS‐based confirmation of pathogen presence, and imaging (X‐ray/CT‐scan) for symptoms and damage assessment has been thoroughly filtered. The possibility of errors in diagnostics and their cause and consequences have also been presented for the ease of readers and further improvisers.
